Val's Journey – Maintaining Independence with Live-In Care

Background: Val, an elderly woman with significant health challenges, has experienced a difficult journey over the past year. She suffers from chronic leg pain following a complex medical procedure, which involved peeling the tendons from her leg. The initial plan to amputate was reconsidered due to concerns about her heart's ability to withstand the surgery. As a result, Val now faces prolonged recovery, pain management, and mobility issues, all of which have made everyday activities more difficult. Despite this, Val made a resolute decision to stay in her own home rather than move into a nursing facility.

Challenges: Val's health issues, particularly with her leg, have significantly affected her mobility and independence. She requires regular care, including redressing of her leg, assistance with mobility, and support with daily activities. Simple tasks like moving around the house and preparing meals have become challenging. At one point, Val’s condition was so critical that both her family and the care team were deeply concerned for her well-being. She also faced the emotional toll of potentially losing her leg, which brought her to a point of reflection on the pain she had endured.

Support and Care: To maintain her independence, Val chose live-in care through Access Care, with Jane becoming her primary caregiver. Jane has been a crucial part of Val's journey, providing support in daily tasks such as cooking and ensuring Val's safety, especially as Val’s mobility remains limited. Jane has even stayed downstairs with Val during particularly tough times, showing dedication and compassion in her role.

Val and Jane have formed a strong bond, working together to preserve some of Val's favourite activities, like baking. With Jane’s assistance, Val is still able to bake treats for her family, which she describes as a source of happiness. Despite not being able to do things as independently as she once could, Val appreciates how Jane helps her maintain her standards in the kitchen, ensuring everything is done exactly how she likes it.

Adapting the Home: To further support her independence, Val had a stair lift installed in her home, which allows her to access her bedroom and bathroom upstairs once again. The stair lift symbolises a major step forward for Val, giving her the freedom to move around her home without relying on others for assistance. This improvement also represents Val’s commitment to staying in her home, where she feels most comfortable and in control of her surroundings.

Reflections on Care: Val reflects on her decision to opt for live-in care rather than moving to a nursing home, a decision she firmly believes was the right one. She values the flexibility and comfort of receiving care in her own home, and she acknowledges that while the transition to welcoming a caregiver into her personal space wasn’t always easy, it has been a positive experience overall. Val is particularly grateful for Jane, even noting that while having a carer who drives would offer more freedom, Jane has been "super" and exceeded her expectations.

Val’s story emphasises the importance of personalised care, as her relationship with Jane has helped her maintain a sense of normalcy, independence, and happiness. Whether it’s baking together or discussing everyday matters, Jane has become not just a caregiver but a trusted companion in Val’s life.

Val’s Outlook: Despite the ongoing pain and challenges, Val remains positive and engaged with life. She recently attended a race at Newbury with her son, a sign of her determination to stay active. Val also enjoys simple pleasures, like watching children go crabbing at Mudeford, a place she fondly remembers. She finds joy in these moments and continues to make the best of her situation.

In her conversations, Val advises others in similar situations to consider live-in care as a viable option to maintain independence in old age. She acknowledges that while it may require some adjustments, it ultimately allows for greater control over one’s life and surroundings. Val has no regrets about her decision and finds comfort in knowing she made the right choice.

Conclusion: Val’s case highlights the value of personalized, live-in care in supporting elderly individuals with complex health needs. With the support of her live-in carer, Jane, Val has been able to maintain her independence, remain in the comfort of her own home, and continue participating in the activities that bring her joy. Her story serves as an example of resilience, adaptability, and the importance of finding the right care to meet individual needs.
