National Grandparents Day is nearly upon us, taking place on October 6th this year. It’s the perfect opportunity to celebrate our elderly loved ones in our lives and make them feel truly special.
Here at Access Care, we understand how important it is to create meaningful moments for our live-in care clients.
To help you mark this occasion, we’ve come up with a list of fun activities that will be sure to bring a smile to your live-in care client’s face - and their families!
Whether you're a home carer, live-in carer, or simply a dedicated family member, we are sure that our suggestions will help you create lasting memories on this very special day!
Organise a Tea Party at Home
Now we are sure you will agree, nothing says celebration like a good old-fashioned tea party!
Setting up a quaint tea party in your live-in care client’s home or garden can be a really lovely way to bring them and their family together. Here’s how to make it an event to remember:
Plan the Menu
Prepare a selection of different teas, and cold drinks. Pair them with a choice of finger sandwiches, sausage rolls, cakes, scones, and pastries. Don't forget the clotted cream and strawberry jam!
Invite Family Members
If possible, you could invite your live-in care client’s family members to join in the celebrations. This gathering can be a great chance for everyone to get together and share stories from times gone by over a cup of tea.
Bake a Cake Together
Baking is a really fantastic way to bond and create something really tasty! Why not try baking a classic Victoria sponge cake with your live-in care client? Here is a really delicious recipe for a Victoria Sponge cake, kindly shared by one of our talented live-in carers:
Victoria Sponge Cake Recipe
Ingredients:
200g unsalted butter (softened)
200g caster sugar
4 large eggs
200g self-raising flour
1 tsp baking powder
2 tbsp milk
250ml double cream
1 tsp vanilla extract
Fresh strawberries
Instructions:
Preheat your oven to 180°C (350°F). Grease and line two 20cm (8 inch) round cake tins.
Beat the butter and sugar together until pale and fluffy.
Add the eggs one at a time, mixing well after each addition.
Sift in the flour and baking powder, then fold gently into the mixture.
Stir in the milk until you have a smooth batter.
Divide the batter between the two tins and smooth the surfaces.
Bake for 20-25 minutes until golden and a skewer inserted into the center comes out clean.
Allow to cool completely before removing from tins.
Whip the double cream with vanilla extract until soft peaks form. Spread onto one of the cakes, top with sliced strawberries, and sandwich the other cake on top.
Baking together can be a really fun and rewarding activity, and the results are sure to be a hit with your live-in care client and their family!
3. Go Through Old Family Photos
Spending time with your home care client looking through their old family photos can be a lovely activity, especially if their family and grandchildren don’t live locally to them.
Create a Photo Album
You could gather a few of your live-in care client’s most cherished photos and arrange them in a beautiful album. This can be a wonderful keepsake for your home care client and their family.
Share Stories
Encourage your live-in care client to share their stories behind the photos.
Virtual Sharing
If your live-in care client’s family can’t be there in person to celebrate with them, you could have a go at sharing the photos through a video call so that everyone can reminisce together.
4. Organise a Surprise Video Call
In today’s digital age, distance doesn’t have to mean disconnection from loved ones. If your home care client’s family lives far away and can't visit them on National Grandparents Day, you can organise a surprise video call instead.
Set Up the Call
Beforehand, coordinate with your live-in care client’s family members to set up a convenient time for the video call. (Make sure you have a reliable internet connection and a device with a camera too!)
Prepare your Home Care Client
Surprise your live-in care client with the video call, making sure that they are sat comfortably and have all they need for the video call.
Celebrate Virtually
During the call, your live-in care client and their loved ones can share stories from times gone by, catch up with what’s been happening in their life recently and maybe even listen to some music together or play a quiz game.
5. Enjoy a Favourite Hobby Together
Engaging in your live-in care client’s favourite hobby can make their day truly special, especially if they aren’t able to celebrate with their loved ones. Here are some ideas:
Gardening
If your live-in care client likes gardening, you could spend time together planting flowers or tending to their garden. The outdoor activity and fresh air can be very therapeutic.
Crafting
For live-in care clients who have a love of crafts, gather some materials and spend the day with them making something special. Whether it’s knitting, painting, or scrapbooking, the creative process can be really fulfilling.
Reading
Reading a much loved book or poetry aloud with your live-in care client can be a calming and enjoyable experience. Choose something your home care client loves and enjoy it together.
