As a live-in caregiver it can be tricky to think of activities to do with your client during these cold winter days. Why not make some decorative bird feeders with your live-in care client to attract wildlife into your garden! They are easy to make, and it means you can watch the birds in your garden eating your own creations.

Here are the ingredients you will need to make them:

  • Bird seed mix – you should be able to find this in your local garden centre or your nearest supermarket

  • Gelatine – 2 sachets

  • Boiling water– If you want to make a good few feeders use a half a litre of water; if you want to make a small amount only use a quarter of a litre

You will also need:

  • Mixing bowl and a spoon

  • Biscuits cutters

  • A tray

  • Straws – only a few

  • Tin foil

  • Ribbon to hang the feeders

Method:

To start, pour the boiling water into the mixing bowl. Pour the sachets of gelatine into the bowl and mix until the gelatine has completely dissolved.

Transfer the bird seed (gradually) into the bowl and stir. Make sure the seeds are covered.

Take your tray and cover it in tin foil. Place the biscuit cutters on top of the tray and fill the cutters with the mixture.

Using the back of the spoon, ensure all the mixture is in the cutter, make sure that they are not overflowing.

Cut the straw into small pieces to place into the mixture (making sure they are sticking out of the mixture). This is going to be the hole to hang the bird feeder.

Place the bird feeders in the fridge for a couple of hours. Take them out and leave them to dry out overnight.

You should now be able to push the bird feeders out of the cutters. Take the straw out and replace with ribbon

Now they are ready to hang in your garden. Enjoy watching the birds eating your home-made bird feeders!
